Intergalactic Salvage Corp

In addition to my story work and senior film, my class spent the year collaborating with John and Brenda Romero's Masters Game Design program at UCSC. I was placed on "Intergalactic Salvage Corp" and ended up designing the four main characters, despite my focus as a story artist. Unfortunately the project was shelved at the end of May and we only got two characters in the game but it was a fun project to work on.
This were early concepts for playable characters. We knew we wanted two human characters, male and female, and two alien characters. The top left became Gina, and another artist took over her after this point.
Pose and expression sheets for Notch and Pietro. Notch was my favorite character by far, I was sad he never had the chance to be animated.
Croak was a nightmare of a character to design. He went through like five different artists before I ended up with him. Our lead was really gunning for a frog character but nothing sat right for MONTHS. Until I finally realized that all my problems can be solves by drawing Muppets. I really hate the final design and I still sorta wish I could have revisited another idea. But everyone else loved the final look, so that's all the matters!

Lastly I was asked to design win and lose poses that fit within the lineless style of the rest of the game and to match the final designs that were animated for Gina and Pietro. I had never done lineless cartoons before so it was a nice break from my comfort zone. The game was shelved before I had a chance to do second poses for Notch and Croak, but they make for a nice looking character line up.

Life Upgrade!

Apparently announced this everywhere but my art blog. But I got a job!
As of today I am officially a storyboard trainee at Blue Sky Studios in Connecticut. I get to spend the next four months working my butt off and soaking up as much information as I physically and mentally can without dying.

I can't wait!

End of the Vine

And here it finally is! My Senior film.

Working on this project was unlike anything I had ever done before. Before last year, I had never storyboarded, I had never worked with more than five people on a project and I had never worked on an animated film. In the fall of 2013, my graduating class was approached by Adobe Imagination Labs to create five animated shorts based on the future of technology. My friend, and co-director, Megan Hart came up with the idea that later became End of the Vine.

Working with such a large team on a student project definitely lead to some new challenges and a lot of butting heads. But it also lead to some great innovations. Originally our film was going to be done as a hand drawn animation, until our modeler Jared Mills convinced us to do 3D instead. Our school had not produced a 3D film before this so we were on our own for most of the actual production. Luckily we had a crack team of amazing animators who were more than thrilled to work on an original 3D film for their reels. Plus it was a great opportunity to make something that looked like nothing that had ever come from San Jose State.

I'm extremely proud of my team, they're all wonderful and they all deserve jobs if they don't already have them.

Then and Now

Now that I'm working regular hours instead of working through the insanity of three senior projects and a part time job, I have time to get back into drawing for myself. Which means real progress on Darkness and Dekay is ACTUALLY HAPPENING. It's great to be churning out comic pages again. I recently found the old issue I had made in 2011 and the comparison between the first panel then and the first panel now is so jarring. What a difference a few years makes!

If I can keep up a page or two a week, I'm hoping to get the first issue finished by the end of the year. With my improved drawing skills and Bennett's improved writing, it feels good seeing this story finally come together.

Summer Fun Stuff

Now that I'm done with school I'm relearning how to draw for fun! So here's some stuff I've enjoyed through the last couple months.
Completely indulgent self-instert sketches after seeing How to Train Your Dragon 2. The dragon racing really grabbed me.
And I got DEEP into Guardians of the Galaxy. The old comics and the movie, just the whole franchise honestly. Rocket and Groot are just too precious.

Couple sketches I liked from tumblr. I miss my west coast friends! But I should be seeing you all in November!

I've been pretty excited about Gerard Way's new solo album, I loved the singles. My pre-order just arrived and I'm looking forward to listening to the whole thing.
This was a really really fun commission to do. Ghost is my favorite Pokemon type by a lot, and it was a real treat to be asked to draw them. The friend who commissioned this is planning to get it tattooed on himself, and I'm crazy excited to see that.

I'm working on Darkness and Dekay pages and another new side project, so there should be updates on that soon!

Hellaween + Inktober

About a week or two ago I decided I needed a group of completely self-indulgent characters to mess around with. By combining my love of monsters, NorCal hipster trash and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater I was able to bring Hellaween into my world. A world where a gang of monster punks and two streetwise humans got a beef to settle. I'm not quite sure where I want this world to end up, whether it's comics, storyboards, or maybe even animated shorts, I'm certainly going to have fun learning who these characters are. Plus I needed an excuse to draw vampires in hawaiian shirts.

To help me figure out who these nerds are, I'm doing Inktober! One drawing a day featuring at least one of these five characters. As an added bonus, I'm using this Halloween themed art challenge I found on tumblr to help keep me inspired through the month. This is going to be fun!

Day 1: Fall Leaves

Day 2: Crow

Day 3: Pumpkin

 Day 30: Undead

 Day 31: Full Moon!

And there you have it. 31 Days of an ink filled Hellaween. Thanks for the views, likes, reblogs and new followers, this was a ton of fun and I look forward to next inktober!

CSU Media Arts + Goodbye Blue Sky

We did it! And by "it" I mean we won first place in animation for our film End of the Vine at the CSU Media Arts Festival in LA this weekend. I'm super proud of my team, and thank you to my co-director Megan Hart, and team mates Jeanette McKillop, Jake Baker, Nick Marshall and Jared Mills for attending the festival and supporting the film we worked so hard on. You guys are amazing.

I'd also like to mention that my time at Blue Sky has come to an end. The last four months have been a crazy ride of meeting new people and learning more about storyboarding in a short amount of time than I have in the last year since I decided that this was what I wanted to do. We spent some time working with mentors on a training project before switching over to boarding on a new Blue Sky film coming out in 2017! I have to wait a while, but it's my first film credit, which is really exciting.
While Blue Sky was an amazing studio to work for, I realized the east coast was not where I wanted to be, and I am now back in sunny California! And thrilled to be here.

Here's my two scenes from the training portion of the program.

The four trainees were each given a section of a script called "Oak Tree", this section is the last scene before the end of act one.

Part Two of Blue Sky's "Oak Tree Assignment", which follows Rip figuring who is left on the tree after it's uprooted in the storm and dropped into the middle of the ocean.

November 2014

I've done a few story tests recently, and I'll probably share those once I find out what's happening but until then, here's some fun warm up stuff from the last month. Some of it is stupider than others but that's perfectly fine by me.
I'm REALLY into the Spider-Girl Gwen Stacy story. Spider-Man's been one of my favorite heros since I was a kid so it's AWESOME to see that origin story from the perspective of Gwen if she had been bitten instead of Peter. Plus that costume is bad ass, and is at the top of my cosplay list for 2015.

Some things happened when I was catching up on Regular Show and Adventure Time.

Being home in California has given me a chance to pick up my markers again. I missed them so much! I do a lot of my personal work with pencil and ink, but it's been a looooong time since I was able to color anything traditionally.
I'm working on a series of character designs based on the Cosplay Pikachu from the new Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire games, just for funzies. I never played the original Gen III, so this is my first time in Hoenn and I am loving it.

Ultimate Spider-Man Storyboard Test

Ultimate Spider-Man Test from Megan Lawton

I recently had the exciting opportunity to test for Ultimate Spider-Man. I didn't get the job, but it was a great chance to exercise my action boarding chops. I'm a huge fan of Spider-Man, and the show is really funny, so it was really fun and challenging test to take. Maybe I didn't get the job this time, but that's definitely not going to stop me from seeking out more Marvel Animated opportunities!

Powerpuff Girls Test

Powerpuff Girls Test from Megan Lawton

When I got home from Blue Sky, I did a test for CN's Powerpuff Girls. Another alum from SJSU got the job instead, (go Shrunkenheads!) but PPG was one of my favorite shows as a kid and this was super fun to do.

Merry Christmas to Me

After four months of using a cintiq at my Blue Sky internship, coming home to my Intuos 4 held together with electrical tape and a prayer was a nightmare. The disconnect between the tablet and my laptop was huge and it slowed down my boarding substantially. So for Christmas my parents and I went splitzies on a a 22HD Cintiq and it's...it's so beautiful. I haven't upgraded my laptop or tablet in like eight years, this is so amazing.

Now all I need is to get my desk out of storage!

Adventure Time Story Test

Cool New Job!

Oni Press is partnering with Nickelodeon and Jhonen Vasquez to bring the world a brand new Invader Zim comic. On the team is Jhonen Vasquez, Aaron Alexovich, Rikki Simons, Eric Trueheart and Me! I'll be inking the series and I could not be more excited to be a part of this team.

Look for the first issue coming this July!

Tumblr Junk

Things have been a little crazy around here. I've been attending conventions, taking story tests and Zim just started to ramp up big time. Doesn't leave a lot of room for personal art! But I do manage to squeeze in some quick drawing memes and sketch prompts on tumblr every now and then.
Witchsona Meme
Pokemon sketch requests (Duskull, Spinda, Ursaring)
Portrait commission examples of Miles and Sloane
Zim and Howlite, my submission for the Steven Universe Gemsona week on tumblr
All that good sketchbook stuff. I may have a fancy tablet but nothing beats scribbling in your sketchbook. I got really into drawing Rocket Raccoon for a while, Guardians of the Galaxy Animated Series if you're looking for artists, I am available for work *wink wink*
