Turnarounds for Darkness and Dekay

A strikingly accurate portrayal of me during finals. Also for Greg Goodson's Oni Meme on Tumblr
A new character for a comic I'm developing. His name is Hiro, he likes hip hop, slaying vampires and anime.
A little fanart for possibly my new favorite show, Gravity Falls. The quote is from a TJ Miller (voice of Robbie) stand up gig I went to a few months ago.
Sketched by the wonderful Brittany Hayden, colored by me.

And of course an assortment of things from my sketchbooks

Speed paints from Attack the Block

The first big project for my visual development class, based on a news story of a kitten that escaped a pack of dogs by hiding under the hood of a car.

The second project was to create an environment based on the Alien movies, based on a photograph we took of structures on our college campus.
This was my first semester of modeling in Maya, where we modeled, textured and lit a Webley & Scott Flare Gun
A selection of grizzlies from a zoo day with bear designer extraordinaire, David Colman.

For my final project in Visual Development we got to pick any short story from three authors, design the characters and create three to four illustrations based on story moments. I chose No Particular Night or Morning, by Ray Bradbury. The following is a selection of development work, character turnarounds and four moments that I felt told a cohesive and complete story.

Crew of You

For Barron Story's class, in which we had to design six characters based on different aspects of our own personality, set in the same universe. Here is my rag-tag crew of Kyle, the amateur ghost hunter, and a rouges gallery of different monsters.
And my final illustration! Sketched in pencil, inked with a pentel pocket brush and sakura micron pens, colored in photoshop.
Between designing the cast and completing the final image, we got to spend a few classes getting to know our characters and the world they live in. First we spent a class building characters out of clay, and second we built dioramas of our set designs and used multiple flashlights and gels to create a lighting concept. It's amazing how much lighting did for my little box set!

And for funzies, I put together a couple work in progress shots of the final image.

Pro/Con and Holy Hell Hotel

My last two assignments for Barron Story's class!

This was the Pro/Con assignment, in which we were to take a stance on something we feel strongly about and create an image representing that in one 2.5 hour class period. I did a marker and ink drawing of my feelings against needless shark finning, and pro-shark conservation. Because sharks are the best.
For our last project the class chose a concept and a title for a class made zine. Our zine is called The Holy Hell Hotel, and we all created spreads based on this idea, and by the end of the semester we're all going to have a book filled with our classmate's work. I'm pretty excited, because some how we managed to create a cohesive story throughout the book without much planning. I'll post pictures once we get them printed and bound!

Dang I was really good about updating this regularly for a while what happened.
I guess I forgot to upload this one, but this was the "generations" project from the beginning of Barron Story's class. I call it "A History of Tight Pants and Torn Leggings".

A couple new prints I made for Fanime this year, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls and Canti (FLCL) meets BMO. All three went over really well.
Sketches from two of my favorite movies this summer, Pacific Rim and Monster's University. Ron Perlman tweeted my drawing of Hannibal Chau how bananas is that?
I've also been playing a lot of Animal Crossing this summer. A lot.
A couple things featuring characters from Darkness and Dekay and my yet to be named Urban Fantasy project.

Mallancholy Comics

A few years back a little indie publisher called DAPShow put out a call for a gothic themed anthology, appropriately named, The Gothology. The following are my contributions to volumes 1, 2 and the never finished volume 3. This was a pretty big step into comics for me.  The first one is from ~*2009*~ so the art's pretty bad, this is your warning.

Making the jump to 2010, look at that improvement.

Hooooooo look at that 2011 artwork. The cast gets a major design overhaul. Except for Noel, who's only real change was that I had taken figure drawing.

Unfortunately volume 3 was never published, so at the time I didn't feel the need to continue the story but I wish I had gone further into the last one. These guys were a lot of fun to work with and it's cool taking a look back at these little shorts. Maybe they'll come back one day. Maybe.

Over the summer I got really into Pacific Rim. Newt in particular struck a chord with me. Not to mention Ron Perlman retweeted my sketch of his character with Charlie Day's. Which was pretty exciting.

Also I'm really into Pokemon right now, good luck trying to talk to me about anything else.

Until next time!

November Sketch Dump

Just a handful of things from the eight different sketchbooks I can't choose between. There's some development sketching for the storyboards I've been working on the last few months as well as some other personal characters and of course, pokemon. If you're not playing XY, you're seriously missing out.

Plus! Invader Zim sketches I did for fun the other week while I was revisiting the series. STILL GREAT.

Pretty much any time I have a spare moment to draw for myself it ends up being Pokemon. The new generation is just too good. Me and my charmander have come a long way together since Blue.
Also my babby noivern, Wenesday. She killed it in the Elite Four.

The semester just ended yesterday, so I hope to upload my projects from the Fall pretty soon.

Pillar of Hope

Since the middle of Fall Semester I've been hard at work storyboarding one of the five short films my graduating class is producing for Adobe. The goal is to create a short film addressing a prompt about what the future might be like and how people might solve problems using technology of the future. This was one of the first versions of the storyboards from last semester.

This is the most recent version of the story. Since last semester we've been addressing issues like design and condensing the story into something we can realistically finish by the end of the semester while still being entertaining and making sense. It's not quite there yet, but it's definitely getting there. The colored frames are from my team mate, Denise Magdale.

Plus here's a sneak peak at some character designs I'm working on for a platformer fighting game which is being produced by some Masters in Game Design students at UCSC  with  John and Brenda Romero. Only three of them lead to final designs.

Help Me Go to London!

Some how the stars have aligned and I've been presented with the opportunity to travel to London with a few of my classmates and faculty at the end of March. To help pay for my trip I'm taking character commissions until I leave.
The folks over on tumblr and deviantart have already kickstarted me with a first round of commissions, so here's some more examples of what you could be getting! I'm comfortable drawing humans, animals, anthros, monsters, cyborgs, etc, as well as your own original characters, working from a prompt or theme (like the battle worn flapper below) or fan art and fan characters.

The chart above is where prices start, shoot me an email for a price quote or if you have any questions!

A quick sketch of the protagonists from my comic, Darkness and Dekay. It's important to remember that drawing characters interacting is always more fun than drawing a single character pin up.

So here's some single character pin ups I did. Tom Nook is for the animation club's Nintendo themed charity gallery they're putting together. The modern looking Dinolich on the right was for Tumblr's "witchsona" meme.
And a few recent commissions from my London fundraiser that I was particularly fond of. I always love when people ask me to draw things like Pokemon. Only two more weeks until I go out of the country for the first time!

Hold on to your butts everyone because I’m traveling south for WONDERCONES this coming weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center. I haven’t been to Wondercon since it left San Fransisco three years ago so I’m not really sure what to expect! But I’m excited, I’ve never tabled at a con this big or traveled so far for one. Should be a hoot!

I’ll be at Table #AA27!

March-April 2014 + Wondercon Sketches

I haven't had time to sit down and scan everything for a nice big sketch dump, but I do have a few things I've uploaded to tumblr in the last few months. Above are a couple things from my flight home from my trip to London. I'm really going to have to visit more of Europe, but wow I could do without a lengthy day time flight. So many babies.

Sketches from Wondercon as well. The Dinolich and Mighty Boosh were used as commission examples. I got a lot of great requests at this convention, like "Graduation Dalek" and "A Muppet of my Choice"

My own graduation is coming up fast, so in the next month look forward to my senior film, concept work on a video game with UCSC, more storyboards and of course more ugly pokemon.

Speaking of graduation, my senior gallery show is up and open daily at Works Gallery in downtown San Jose. But if you’re not from the Bay Area, our online gallery is up for viewing! Check out selected pieces from my 57 classmates in visual development, animation, modeling and story. I highly recommend going to the gallery in person if you can.

I've also opened a Society6 store for anyone who can't make it to my convention appearances. There's a ton of other merch for sale too, like t shirts and mugs!
This week if you click the link, you'll get free shipping on your orders from now until Sunday.

DeliverBee Story Test

At the beginning of April I was contacted by DreamWorks with the extremely exciting news that I would be moving to the second part of the Story Initiative selection process, the test. Unfortunately, last week I received word that I wasn't selected. But the good news is I learned a lot, got some informative feedback from professionals and got a great portfolio sequence out of the test.

The prompt was very vague which left a lot of room for me to create my own characters and come up with my own story. So here's DeliverBee, the story of a tiny delivery girl and her bee on a dangerous mission.
